What No One Tells You As A D1 Athlete
Wow, was I surprised when I got to Southern Methodist University my freshman year. They told me 6 am workouts everyday and weights in the afternoon three times per week. It did not sound so bad at first. These were just a few things that absorbed time as a Student Athlete, there was much more.
I will just highlight all the add ons:
Captains Practices “Optional” Nothing is Optional
Compliance Meetings
Commute to and from the boathouse
Scheduling Trainer times for recovery.
These are just a few of the things athletes are faced with that take more time away from academics and building friendships outside your team.
The Outcome:
Sleep Depravation
Little time to meet with professors
Proper Nutrition
Lack of friendships outside of your team.
Mental Drain
Injury
If I had been informed of all of the time required of me I would have planned and approached my freshman year differently. You can never ask enough questions or gather enough information to overcome the trials of a, Freshman Student Athlete.
